• ANSWER: An answer is a response to the complaint which is severed within 20 days
of the receipt of the complaint and which includes a written statement of
the defenses agains the allegations brought by the plaintiff.
It is a pleading, by which the defendant in a suit endeavors to resist the
plaintiffs demand by alleging different facts, as distinguished from a
demurrer which admits the facts but contends they are legally
insuffiecient.
• APPEAL: A request to take a case to another court for review. A request by the
prosecutor or defense for a reviewing court to reconsider certain issues in
the case and to render a different decision. The court of first resort for
criminal and juvenile cases in the Minnesota Court of Appeals (except in
first-degree murder cases). After the court of appeals has ruled, a party
dissatisfied with that decision may request that the Supreme
Court hear the case. That decision is discretionary with the court.
• APPELLANT: The party appealing a decision or judgment to a higher court.
